What should be done about MBBR media accumulation and poor fluidisation in recirculating aquaculture systems?

Ensure uniform aeration, as this provides the driving force for media fluidisation. Check whether the aeration discs or pipes are blocked or unevenly distributed. An excessively high packing density (e.g. exceeding 40 per cent) is a common cause of agglomeration. This should be dynamically adjusted according to the water quality load; a packing density of around 30–35 per cent is generally recommended. Check whether the media retention screens are blocked by biofilm or debris.

How can you tell if biofilm formation has been successful?

Do not rely solely on visual inspection. Biofilm formed within the last 30 days is virtually invisible to the naked eye; only a slight change in the colour of the media may be noticeable. The correct way to assess this is by testing the water quality: when the concentrations of ammonia-nitrogen and nitrite at the outlet of the biological reactor are significantly lower than those at the inlet, this confirms that biofilm formation has been successful and that the biofilm has begun to function.

Why is the MBBR media floating on the water’s surface in large quantities rather than sinking?

During the initial period after new MBBR media is introduced, it is normal for it to float due to its hydrophobic surface. The wetting and fluidisation process can be accelerated as follows:
Solution: Sprinkle water onto the surface of the MBBR media. Increase the aeration intensity appropriately to help the media tumble and become wetted.
